Day 24: "Pitit se riches malere"...

"Children are the wealth of the poor"

For the past few days, there's been a woman here named Catherine who's a journalist that's been to Haiti countless times over the past few years writing stories on families and the changes since the earthquake. This trip, she brought her 6-year-old daughter Lyla along so that she could meet some of the families that her mom has been writing about.

As we were looking through Catherine's pictures of the past few days, it struck me how amazing kids are. I mean, here is this little girl who doesn't speak and French or Kreyol, playing with these little Haitian kids like she's known them forever! She didn't seem to notice or care that they were in a 1-room house, or that they barely had a roof over their heads. All that mattered to these kids was enjoying each other's company. Catherine was asking Lyla to tell her things that she saw when she was looking out the window of the car - Lyla mentioned kids walking to school and the backpacks they were wearing, but didn't talk about the rubble everywhere or the people without shoes.

It just goes to show you how incredible and accepting kids can be. She also found out my birthday is coming up, and left this little treat for me on the board...

When I thanked her for it, she told me "I drew you a butterfly because I didn't get you a gift". So sweet!
